"In giving blood or an organ of your body, may you always have this human and religious perspective: may your gesture be made as an offering to the Lord, who identified himself with those who suffer ... May it be a gift made to the suffering Lord, who in his passion gave himself completely and poured out His blood for the salvation of mankind." John Paul II

Every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. This means the Red Cross must collect 44,000 pints of blood every day to meet the demand. Currently there are approximately 10 million blood donors in the United States. This is only 3 percent of the population. So join the elite and give blood. Every pint donated can potentially save 3 lives.

Blood Donors Must:

Be healthy*

Be at least 17 years old

Weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.

* Note: Healthy means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, healthy also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control.

Council 185 Says Thanks

In the past few months, Council185 has offered thanks to our Newtown First Responders by inviting them to be our guests at our two annual spring events, the KofC Fish Fry and Irish Cabaret.

The Sandy Hook Fire Department has strongly supported our Irish Cabaret for many years and this year we had the opportunity to give back and thank them as well as all of the First Responders (additional Fire Companies, Police, Ambulance, Switchboard Operators) for their heroic efforts on 12/14. Seventy First Responders were our guests and had an opportunity to enjoy some great music and company. It was great to see so many who have given so much truly having a good time. In addition we renewed all of the Sandy Hook businesses who support our Cabaret Program at no charge.

Council 185 also invited first responders to be our guest at one of our Fish Fry's. We had about 40 share a meal with us.

Our prayers and thanks go out to all of these heroes!
